Lily Avery is a freelance essayist, journalist, and outdoor enthusiast.

Raised in rural Southern Appalachia, Lily’s work draws inspiration from the rich cultural traditions of the region. Echoing the meandering nature of oral storytelling, her writing challenges conventional narrative framework with nonlinear structures that emphasize the fluidity of time, memory, and the human condition. Lily uses her work to explore the multifaceted notion of place and document the Truth, whatever it may be.

Lily is a regular health and lifestyle feature contributor at Savannah Magazine and currently teaches Nonfiction writing courses at the Grub Street Center for Creative Writing. She has been published in several newspapers, magazines, and literary journals. Her work can also be found in publications such as Savannah Morning News, Mangrove Literary Journal, and Port City Review.

Currently based in New England, Lily received her BFA and MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Writing, with a focus in Creative Nonfiction and Literary Journalism.

When she’s not writing, Lily can be found backpacking with her dog Lupa, reading Joan Didion, and listening to her Nana recount stories of long ago.
